St. Francis of Assisi (c. 1182-1226) first began writing Latin church hymns with the joyful feeling of today’s Christmas carols in the 13th Century. Prior to that, Christmas music was limited to liturgical hymns solemnly written about the nativity. After Puritanical banishment in the 17th century, the tradition was revived and thrives today in both secular and non-secular forms.
